Competence in Applying DBT

As DBT has become increasingly popular and the research evidence supporting its use with multiple complex disorders continues to grow, individual mental health practitioners, agencies, and large mental health systems reach out for training in DBT. The desire and demand for evidence-based mental health treatment to consumers has never been higher. Accompanying this, those responsible for funding mental health treatment, both public and private third party payers, are demanding demonstration of competence in applying this model. This is to ensure that practitioners and programs who state they are providing DBT, are in fact applying the model as tested and as developed by the treatment developer, Dr. Marsha Linehan.

DBT® Certification of Individual Therapists

The DBT®-Linehan Board of Certification (DBT-LBC) proudly launches its program for the Certification of Individual Therapists. This is the one and only, treatment-developer-approved certification program in DBT® in the US.

The DBT®-Linehan Board of Certification is a non-profit organization whose purpose is to develop certification of clinicians and DBT® programs in order to promote the availability of competently delivered, effective DBT®. Certification will help to ensure programmatic and treatment fidelity for the delivery of comprehensive DBT. By maintaining a roster of certified DBT therapists and DBT programs, DBT-LBC hopes to assist consumers, mental health professionals, governmental agencies, and insurance companies in finding highly qualified DBT® providers.

All the information you need to prepare, apply, and track the entire process for certification can be found at the dbt-lbc.org website. It is also where the subsequent list of certified providers and programs will be found. The DBT-LBC are taking applications effective immediately for the certification of individual therapists. Check out the website for more information: http://www.dbt-lbc.org.

Accept No Substitutes

Substitute treatments may have no or, at worst, catastrophic results. A roster of certified mental health practitioners is needed to ensure therapists are providing DBT with fidelity to DBT as it has been scientifically validated.

How You Can Help

As many of you know, there has been a group of hardworking volunteers developing a Linehan-approved certification process. The fruits of those labors can be seen in the DBT-LBC website and the development of the certification process. We need your participation too. How? By making a significant financial contribution to the funding needs that can't be handled by volunteers.

Will you please send a generous gift today? Your tax deductible contribution through the Linehan Institute, a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization, will be forwarded to the certification efforts of the DBT-LBC. Make a donation today. We can't tell you how much it would mean.
